SINN FÉIN remains the most popular party in the country, with support slumping for Fine Gael, according to the latest opinion poll.

The Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks poll shows support for Sinn Féin at 24%, which is five percentage points above its general election result. Fine Gael sits at 17%, its lowest level of support since January 2016. Support for Fianna Fáil is at 20%.

The findings will likely concern Fine Gael leader Simon Harris, whose personal popularity remains at 34%, with 70% of those polled saying they disagreed with his appointment at Finance Minister, following the resignation of Paschal Donohoe.

Of the bigger parties, Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald is the most popular leader, at 37%, with Michéal Martin’s popularity at 36%. The Social Democrats’ Holly Cairns is the most popular leader in the country, with a 40% approval rating, down three points from the last poll.

Meanwhile, support for the Social Democrats is at 8%, down one point, while Aontú is at 5%, also down a point. The Labour Party remains unchanged at 5%, Independent Ireland is on 5%, PBP-Solidarity is at 3% and the Green Party is at 2%. Support for Independents and others is at 11%.
